Zureta

Concept

One of the most common sources for disappointment as well as inspiration in printing is the misprint.

The reason for misprints a manifold, sometimes they are simple mistakes but sometimes they are a profound mystery. With the digital tools available in contemporary print workshops, the glitch and the bug are now found along widows, orphans and blitzer. Creating even more mysteries and a myriad of options for things to go surprisingly wrong and to innovate.

Misprints are a way to discover alternatives, they are unpredictable and part of the unique creative processes within printmaking and printmedia. Artists that value the misprint develop ways to turn failure into success.

By focusing on the different strategies to take advantage of failure the opportunities that are inherent to the misprint will become apparent. These strategies may be individual achievements but they might also be the result of a tradition of the printmaking workshops or they might be based on an approach that is part to the cultural background.

The cooperation project “ずれた – the misprint” will bring young artists from different continents together to explore how they deal with the unpredictable in the creative process and how the draw inspiration from failure.

Zureta Exhibition at the Exhibition Hall of the College of Fine Art of Shanghai University. 2017.12.03 – 2017.12.20

The first stop of the zureta exhibition traveling around the world is Shanghai University.

The opening reception was on the 3. of December and the show will be up until December 20th. A catalogue of the show has been published in Chinese and the exhibition has been enlarged by art work prepared by the graduate students of the College of Fine Art.

Art History loves to tell the story of the perfect masterpiece done by the genius, but all artists know that quite often outstanding work is created through failure rather than success. Printmaking is a complex process that oﬀers plenty of opportunities for failure and mistake. All artists in this show share this experience and oﬀer us work that they created after being inspired by a mistake. We choose to call the show “zureta” , because misaligned plates often have inspired a new work. We are happy to welcome young artists from 19 Universities out of 14 Countries and 5 Continents to share their “zureta moment” with us.

Misalignments, like misprints or mistakes and misunderstandings, are a constant source for innovation. They are a worldwide engine powering creativity. The symposium will bring together artists and scholars from diﬀerent countries to discuss how the unexpected result of a mistake can trigger the creation of new art works. As all the participants share the use of printmaking as means of artistic expression, we hope the symposium will allow to learn how colleagues all over the world use their failures for inspiration. Printmaking has its origin in the creation of mass media, and a world that is dominated by the media needs tools to question what mistakes mean to it.

“ずれた – zureta” started in 2014 when the Printmaking Lab of Prof. Miida Seiichiro of the Tokyo University of the Art made the first show, of work from the print workshops created out of unexpected results in the printmaking process and the consequently established artistic practice.

In 2015 “ずれた – zureta” expanded through teaming up with Department for Graphics and Printmaking of the University of applied Arts Vienna. The result were two astonishing and inspiring exhibitions in Vienna and Tokyo.

Now we hope to expand even further and send out the invitation to participate to all the institutions listed below as they expressed interest in the project and its theme.
